We are proud of the first group of students from Madison schools to receive the Wisconsin Seal of Biliteracy. This first group is from the Dual Language Immersion program at La Follette High School.

We have established a goal to provide every student access to a challenging and well-rounded education, inclusive of world language learning and courses that have a global focus. The Seal of Biliteracy (SBL) reflects this goal because it promotes linguistic and cultural competence, affirms the value of diversity and identifies students’ bilingual and multilingual skills, which are highly valued in our global society.

The Wisconsin Seal of Biliteracy is a recognition given by a school or district to students who are proficient in English and one or more partner languages, and have demonstrated high levels of global and sociocultural competency by high school graduation. Wisconsin is among 26 states to present the Seal of Biliteracy and we are one of three school districts in our state that offers this certificate.

Criteria for the Seal of Biliteracy

  • Complete all state and district requirements for high school graduation

  • Proficient on state (or district) reading assessments

  • English Language Arts coursework GPA 2.5

  • ACCESS composite score of 4.0 (English Language Learners only)

  • Intermediate, high level world language proficiency (Proficiency may vary by language, skill domain, program model and period of study)

  • Sociocultural competence as it relates to English and a partner language

All DLI students will be recognized at the Senior breakfast at La Follette High School on June 2, 2017, where they will receive a participation certificate. Also, students who have met the attainment criteria will receive the Wisconsin Seal of Biliteracy certificate. We encourage all students to pursue this certificate.  Students can start this journey by contacting their HS representative for further information.
